The Journey of the Magi is the Story of Discovering the Christ Within You

Maji. Discovering Christ Within You

I’ll never forget the day I understood what the word “maji” really meant because it changed my life forever.

I grew up a practicing Catholic and spent many years of my life in the choir, teaching catechism, and even mentally preparing myself for a potential life in the priesthood. To say that the Church played a big role in my life would be an understatement. However, because of my identity as a gay man and my desire to be married and have a family, I knew I was going to have to leave the Church one day. I knew that I wasn’t going to ever be my authentic self in the community, no matter how hard I tried. And so, in 2018, I left.

Right after I left the Church, I felt really lost. Like I no longer had any spiritual grounding. I didn’t feel disconnected from what I knew as “God,” but I definitely felt like I was out on my own—stripped of the sense of home I had long felt inside spiritual community. Because I was suffering, and was feeling pretty desperate for help, I decided to go see an astrologer.

Before this time, I knew very little about astrology. My knowledge of astrology, like many people, was limited to online horoscopes and first-date conversations. I had tarot card and psychic readings done before, but never an astrology reading. But in 2018, I was desperate for answers, and I needed help navigating all the changes that were taking place in my life. So, I booked an appointment with an astrologer.

And it changed my life. For the first time ever, I felt deeply seen for who I was—a soul, with a mission, incarnated on this Earth. Since then, I started to study astrology seriously and came to understand the profound wisdom that is found in the stars.

Even though I knew how powerful astrology was and I knew that I was being called to share it with others, I was still carrying around with me this nagging feeling that somehow this information was wrong to know. That it was somehow “against” the faith I had practiced all my life. #catholicguilt. It bothered me on a deep level but, I figured if the Church wanted to reject me for being gay, why not give them a second reason—for practicing astrology too?

But one day, I attended a mass at an Episcopal church in San Diego. The pastor (a woman) was giving her sermon about the season of Advent (the liturgical season that celebrates the coming of Christ) and spoke about the magi. She taught that the translation of magi meant “wise one” but really referred to “astrologer.”

“Click.” In that instant, I got my permission slip from the Universe to not only continue studying astrology, but to share it with as many people as I can because it has always played an important role in the awakening of humanity. And I was here to awaken humanity. I carried the wisdom of the stars within me.

There is so much that people misunderstand about the magi. (Full disclosure here, I am not a biblical scholar). Contrary to Christmas tradition, the bible doesn’t use the terms “three wise men” or “three kings” to describe the travelers who went to see Jesus after his birth. The gospel writer Matthew used the Greek word ma’goi to describe those who visited Jesus. “Maji” referred to a class of “scholar-priests” of ancient Persia who were known for their knowledge of astronomy, astrology, dream interpretation, philosophy, and religious ritual, hence the translation “wise men.” They often served as councilors to kings and as tutors to princes. They were associated with what we today call magical or occult practices, such as divination. The English word “magic” comes from the ancient word “magi.”

The magi were astrologers.

They knew of the birth of Jesus because they knew how to read the stars. They didn’t simply wander around “following a star.” They were following the charted stars. They knew the wisdom of the stars. In fact, the information they provided was so valuable, as evidenced by King Herod who ordered the slaughter of boys two years old or younger because he knew of the window of time of Jesus’ birth. And, by the way, the star of Bethlehem was not actually a star at all, but the rare conjunction of the planets Jupiter and Saturn (which occurred again most recently in December of 2020).

The magi were led on a journey…to meet the Christ (the Illumined One). So too are we on a journey to meet the Christ…within ourselves. The Christed self is within us. It is our Higher Self. It is our True Self. It is our soul’s essence.

As we continue to heal, release our traumas, step away from limited beliefs, and programming, our spiritual journeys are leading us to embody more and more of our Higher Self (our Christed self). The ascension of this planet is about bringing the Christed energy to Earth to create heaven upon Earth.

If astrology was powerful enough for the magi to meet the Christ 2000 years ago, it is still just as potent for us today. Just as the magi followed the stars to find Jesus, so too can you follow the stars to awaken what is Truth within you.

As 2022 comes to an end, it’s the right time to reflect on our journey and prepare for the days ahead. The energies of 2023 are extremely potent. They will be supporting our spiritual expansion and personal growth. How will you use the gifts of these energies in your life, just as the magi did 2000 years ago?

As we prepare to embark on the journey into 2023, know that there isn’t a more intimate experience of astrology than looking at your unique birth chart with the support of a professional astrologer. Isn’t it time for you to meet the truth of the Christed Self within you?
