Learning to Surrender and Overcoming the Fear of Change

We are in the midst of massive transformation on the planet. As individuals, and as a collective, we have been navigating waters of mounting uncertainty and continual change since COVID, but also before. It seems that many people I speak to these days are talking about major life changes including leaving jobs, separating from toxic relationships, relocating, starting families, and the like. It is perhaps not surprising that as we continue to emerge from the hibernation that 2020 afforded humanity globally, people are now aligning to newer, fresher versions of themselves. Because of this, change is not only necessary, but imminent for many of us. I’d like to share with you how to embrace this change, not be paralyzed in fear of it.

In my personal life, I have grown tremendously over the past year and a few years ago I left my six-figure career to commit myself fully to spiritual coaching. This decision came from a knowing from somewhere deep in my Being that this is what I was contracted to do when I incarnated in this lifetime. This is my reason for being here. With the support of my angelic, galactic, and personal guides, I knew it was time to take the leap, and it feels completely right. No matter how much I feel like I know logically, it doesn’t erase the fear I have of making a change on this scale.

In the past few weeks, I have been learning an important spiritual lesson — surrender. Change, particularly the kind of change that has you aligning with higher frequencies and greater versions of yourself, can be incredibly challenging. It requires that you investigate yourself deeply and release old beliefs and thought patterns that no longer serve a positive purpose. It requires that you get radically honest with yourself and accept that you might not even know who you are completely at this moment. For many, this is where the fear kicks in. The way you think is central to what you believe your identity to be so letting go of these thought patterns means also letting go of parts of yourself. While the temptation is to focus on what is lost, I challenge you to shift your perspective. If you ever wish to grow as an individual, you must make room for new things.

As you recreate yourself, you step into the void, faced with the discomfort of the emptiness. Everything you once knew is no longer. And this is okay. It’s time to surrender.

You must surrender to overcome the fear of change

Surrender is a concept that is deeply misunderstood. Surrender does not mean giving up. It does not mean that you sit by passively as life passes you by. In fact, true surrender requires that you accept the process of your life. To borrow a definition from Eckhart Tolle (1999), “Surrender is the simple yet profound wisdom of yielding to rather than opposing the flow of life” (p. 205). Surrender is about allowing yourself to Be. Surrender is about being okay with what is. Not trying to fix it. Not trying to change it. Just being in it. Oftentimes, it isn’t fear of the outcome that stops someone from making a change in their life; it’s fear of losing control. The true terrifying reality of change is you won’t know exactly what to expect anymore. If you choose to stop opposing and start yielding, your routine will be different. Interactions with others will be different. Your thoughts will be different. Eventually though, you’ll realize you were never really in control to begin with and that’s ok.

Within the stillness of surrender there is a lesson

When we step into the void, it can feel open and raw. When we are in the void, we often feel the instinct to fill the space to divert us from feeling uncomfortable or vulnerable. We pick up the phone to call a friend. We binge watch TV. We drink. We make ourselves busy. Doing anything we can to avoid surrendering due to the fear of change. My invitation to you when you are in the void is to make a choice. Be still. Accept. Allow. Stillness is the spiritual lesson here. And in stillness, you can allow all of what is meant for you to Be. Sit in the discomfort. That is the only way through it, and it is the only way that you will gain the benefit from the experience that is presenting in your life.

Consider moments like these, which may occur for extended periods of time, a sacred pause. They are for a purpose. Know that the purpose is ultimately for your highest good. For however long it lasts, know that it is serving you in some way. Commit to allowing, without exercising the need to control, so that you can find out just how you can use these sacred pauses. You will begin to feel the fear of change fall away. It’s possible that you never shed it completely, but you can pause and be present with it to disarm its impact on you.

Prepare yourself so that change can flow through you

Citation: Tolle, Eckhart. The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment. , 1999. Print.

“The only place you can experience the flow of life is the Now, so to surrender is to accept the present moment unconditionally and without reservation. It is to relinquish inner resistance to what is.” (Tolle, 1999, p. 206)

As you go forward, ask yourself: How much am I prepared to receive from the universe? When we are in the void, the Universe is preparing us for something else. We need space to receive it. Allow yourself to prepare to receive what is coming your way. The more willing you are to surrender and remain in the void, the more space you are opening up to receive what’s in store for us.

Sometimes we get so wrapped up in wondering whether or not we are doing the right thing. “Am I doing what I am supposed to be doing?” “Am I fulfilling my purpose?” Your presence in the world is your purpose. Your purpose is to Be. And to enjoy the ride, taking any and all lessons as they present themselves to you. While you are the creator of your reality, we all must humble ourselves enough to accept that we are not the Divine Creator that set this whole thing in motion. There is so much bigness to be experienced if we just allow it to manifest for us. If we just surrender.

With love,

Cam
