You will exist "until the last time your name is spoken." (Matt Primeau)

On this episode I speak with Matt Primeau, who is a Coach for Achievers, Writer, Philosopher, and Surfer about life before and after a spiritual awakening. Our conversation explores the value of finding joy within yourself, finding bliss in moments of challenge, and learning to surrender instead of suffering in silence. Matt also shares what he calls a non-material spiritualism and the impact we have in other peoples' lives. Most importantly, we conclude that there is something more valuable than the trophies we collect...our spiritual legacy.

today. Welcome, Matt.

Matt: Thank you so much. Cameron.

Track 1: What really marked the beginning of your spiritual awakening.

Matt:

I like to think my spiritual awakening moment occurred. Kind of at like the end of the last cycle of my [00:02:00] life, which was all about accomplishment, which was all about trophies, earning a lot of things, having a lot to show. And what I mean by this is that back before this iteration of myself came to be and after the spiritual kind of awakening process, I was someone who, uh, had ticked all the boxes, especially from a young age, you know, coming out of university the first time. A degree, high paying job right out the gate. I was in a long term committed relationship.

You know, I was living downtown Toronto, which is, you know, a very desirable place to live. An expensive place to live when you're 22, 23 years old. My own vehicle made the parents proud, made my friends maybe envious, perhaps. Um, just had a lot like going on in life. And from the outside it would look like, wow, Matt has already like made it, he's already accomplished all these. Great things and what was really lacking in Cameron was a deep sense of like [00:03:00] fulfillment or um, like an inner light. Really what was happening was I fell into the game of trying to accomplish in the way that society had told me I should and achieved the things that I should want. Why wouldn't you want these things?

Why wouldn't you want a high paying job? And, you know, two weeks of vacation a year and all the things that you're told are, are good at the time. Right. Um,

Track 1: two weeks

Matt: yeah. In retrospect, but back then it was like, well, I'm getting paid two weeks vacation. Wow. That's like, what a great benefit this job has. Right? And if I worked there for 10 years, I'm gonna get three weeks.

Whoa. Crazy point is, is that I had, like, I ticked all these boxes from a really young age. 23, 24. And I had realized like I was still profoundly like not satisfied. I was like upset, um, of the way things were going and, and outwardly everyone, you know, it was hard to believe. 'cause like Matt, you've got all these things going for you.

How could you be like miserable, so to speak? And I wasn't really [00:04:00] public about it either. I was kind of suffering and silence. 'cause I knew like something had changed like that. I wasn't really living up to my soul's purpose for being, I was living up to like my societal expectation for being. And that dissonance was causing all these problems in my life. What it amounted to was me for a couple of years, not acting on it and ignoring it, trying to suppress it in the way most people do, right? Like disassociating from your body, um, consuming perhaps alcohol, marijuana, video games, you know, movies, Netflix, Marvel, like all the things that you get lost in and you forget, like yourself within. For years, I ignored, like the inner calling and eventually the problem started happening. You know, things started to collapse. And I'm a big believer that like, if you're aware of a change that needs to come and you're unwilling to make it, I really believe the universe is gonna orchestrate it for you. And, [00:05:00] yeah. Nodding, agreeance. Yeah. It's, and it's never pretty when that happens. Um, it's, but it's revealing and it's necessary. So for me, what that looked like was. Losing all those trophies. It was almost like within, and it happened very quick within the span of a couple months, um, lost the job, uh, lost a secure income, lost the, the relationship, lost the apartment, lost the vehicle.

I got in a huge totaled accident that was painful on the body. My health was compromised, that was hospitalized. Um, just a lot of things like very, in the short span of time fell apart and it was like a clear indicating that like there was something. something. was, you know, needed to change. And it was almost like my, there was so much tension on this, like this rope in my life, this elastic band that I'd been tugging on and now it finally snapped and everything came down. And from that, like I can think back to when you talk about the spiritual awakening moment, to me it was like, although it's never like one [00:06:00] moment in time, there was definitely like the pinnacle moment, like the realization, and perhaps it was like one of the first realizations where like Matt's consciousness like snapped back in and it was being in like. One of those blue hospital gowns at 4:00 AM in the morning. Like, you know, just like kind of

alone and afraid and feeling like I don't have any of these trophies with me

and none of these trophies are

coming with me if like I pass

on. And um,

Track 1: with me,

Matt: and that moment on I was like, wow, I really need to start living life

Track 1: I was like,

I

Matt: more and calling with like what my soul wants and what's It gonna be fulfilling because I learned quick that like the

the ego's desire or the societal programming desire isn't sufficient for keeping me going. And and if I, had, you know,

Track 1: for keeping me

Matt: passed on that night, for example, there was.

like a regret already,

like that I hadn't done what I was supposed to do. So from that moment, that I decided to dedicate my focus to

wellbeing first and listening to my inner guidance first

and seeing where that would go as opposed to [00:07:00] prioritizing. External things first,

and since then the last, you know, five, six years

since then, um, things have been really spectacular, challenging, and, you know, obstacles to overcome. And it's not easy doing this work and evolving spiritually, but so much more fulfilling and. From the outside. It's almost like it, Cameron, it flipped, right?

Like now everybody's like, wow, Matt, or at least for those first couple years. Wow. Matt has like nothing now, but yeah, he's so much more happier. Why is that a thing? Right?

Yeah. I hope that

Track 1: Yeah.

Matt: of answers your

Track 1: interesting. Yeah, totally. Thank you. We're definitely gonna get to the whole, uh. What constitutes wellbeing for you and what that looked like, and obviously where you're at today. But before we do, I do wanna just reflect a few things, um, on the episode or on the show rather. We talk. I talked to a lot of people about their journeys and their paths, [00:08:00] and I haven't quite yet.

I'm trying to think in this moment, but I haven't quite yet gotten to the point of like. Someone's in the hospital, like the hospital bed because they weren't maybe listening to something. So perhaps in retrospect, I loved what you were saying about, the universe is gonna line things up for you. And the truth is you were receiving guidance for probably quite a long time before.

Those incidences happened right when life, I would just say kind of stripped away from you. In retrospect, what were the pieces that maybe you weren't listening to or your higher self was trying to sort of guide you to see?

Matt: The way I would, what comes up for me first

is this piece about play and I think, um, I. In my journey, I really lost

that. I lost like the fun and, and I think when I was a child I really got lost in, in play and creation and and storytelling and, [00:09:00] and imagination. And that's

Track 1: And

Matt: really connected me to like, uh, my inner spiritual being. And I think somewhere along the way

because society has its way of doing things, I lost like that inner interconnectedness and that inner like

zest and youthfulness for life.

things

got very, Very like serious and things got

like like this, like work mode and this.

like serious mode and life is not a game kind of mindset.

That was never really mine. And what I've realized now, like post these events and listening to what's really led me is like treating, uh, my sense of purpose and my career as play because I genuinely feel it is like a part of my work is like writing and recording. I love that it's like storytelling. It reminds me of when I was a kid, like making up like these fantasy worlds and situations and this was always like good fun for me.

And when I'm working with clients who are [00:10:00] consulting or running workshops and events, just like helping other people get thrilled and excited again and realizing that like the work we do is such an opportunity. Um. To, to play and to spread joy as opposed to be dread and, and feel like we have to. So that was like key for me was, was kind of reconnecting with the inner child in a way. And its ability to see life as like a fun game to play as opposed to like a chore, um, that has to be done out of like, um, some sort of necessity.

Track 1: Yeah. I mean, we are souls that chose to come into bodies and have these experiences down here, presumably because we thought it'd be fun or interesting or there was something down here for us. Then we get here and we're like, oh my God, this life on earth is so X, Y, Z, A. Right? It's so much, and I know personally myself, I can get into that space of, um.

Just working really hard and sort of [00:11:00] forgetting the play aspect, but a lot of resonance in what you shared. I, my listeners know this, but I also was very much in the success mode, whatever that meant. So in my early, I was very good at school. I have two master's degrees, I have a PhD, like I played the whole go to school, achieve, make something of yourself.

And my whole life, all I wanted to do was be a teacher. And that is who I am fundamentally. But, uh, that definition has changed over time. And honestly, it was really disheartening for me when I had my first career as a teacher and I was like, I don't like this. I'm, I'm here. And I love teaching my students and it's fun.

I was teaching entrepreneurship actually in accounting and business, and it was a, a lot of fun, but everything else about it felt really wrong. All the adults, all of the red tape, everything else. And I was like, I don't really want to do this. And so even then I continued to achieve and went for another [00:12:00] degree to become a principal and like change school and all of this.

And. For me, actually,

my whole life changed in a matter of two weeks. You did a couple months, but I had two weeks where, this was in 2018, um, where I left a job for a new one across the country. Left an apartment for one I never saw across the country. Left a relationship, left a. A master's program for a PhD, like literally every identity piece that I had, you were talking about trophies, but any sort of identity piece that I had was like stripped away even though it was my own choice and I knew it was correct.

Um, and so I'm looking, thinking about like sometimes the string, the tension on that string gets really, really. Intense before the universe pushes something or for us to change. Right. And I'm curious what you think about your relationship to change now Because I have, since I would say in 2018 and 2019 were major [00:13:00] spiritual awakenings for me.

Um, and then clarity about my work in the world. But it wasn't even until 2021 where I decided to do it full time. But I'm curious your relationship to change since, because I've moved from. Uh, San Diego went, uh, to, to Maui, uh, which was completely spiritually guided. And now I'm sitting here in Los Angeles having left Maui.

And even though this is a completely spiritually guided process, and I feel like now I have this connection with my higher self, where I don't need to be pushed too, too hard to know. That a change is necessary, right? I don't have to wait until my life crumbles before I do what's correct for me. And it's interesting when this happens, and I'm hoping listeners resonate with it because maybe you've moved through a dark night or many dark nights yourself.

Um. But when you start to understand the [00:14:00] subtle nudges and the messages that are coming from your higher self,

your life doesn't

have to collapse before you start making these moves. And so I know there are people in my life that are like, oh my God, why are you moving to la? Like, that seems literally crazy.

But at the same time, when I moved to Hawaii, people were like, why are you moving to Hawaii? That's crazy. And yet. It's not because I know within myself that it is correct and I'm being guided. So I'm curious, um, one how you understand maybe your own guidance system like this, but even your relationship to change

Matt: I think what it comes down to for me is. Change has become a more welcomed aspect in my life. Once I started to detach my identity from the things that were external to me, uh, I really resist the change back in that former iteration of Matt, so to speak, pre I. Spree pre that spiritual awakening. As you mentioned, like there's many, we go [00:15:00] through many dark nights and I'm sure we went through them when we were children as well. I'm sure we had moments too. And early adolescences, it probably happened very frequently, but for me this was probably like the biggest wave. This was like the rogue of if the spiritual journey is like a set of waves. This was like the rogue wave, like the, the one with the biggest like, uh, trough, right?

And, and uh, and swell size. And I would say like before that one, I was really. I like how you called identities, and I call it trophies. We're both pointing to the same thing, but even the word language we used to describe it shows how we valued it. Like for me it was trophies. It

was something outside of myself that was used as a tool for, uh, gratification or validation, feeling of worthiness.

Right? And that's what trophies usually are. It's like, look, I did a thing. It's on the shelf right.

Sometimes I even look at my books behind me and I'm like, are these just trophies I collect as trophies of wisdom? Should I carry them? I don't know. Like what's the attachment to them there? Right. That's besides the point.

But I come back to like, I was really [00:16:00] attached. I feared change because I was so attached to the things that were outside of me that I had acquired. The, the vehicle, the um, the house, the intersection I left at, lived in, which believe it or not, like when you live in a town like Toronto. People care about, like where in town you live, it's like a status symbol, uh, you know, um, and everything like the job title, the where I was going that year on my vacation, right?

And like your likes on Instagram, just like all these superficial things was like I was attached to these things external to me. Um, so I did, I feared change because I didn't wanna lose them. 'cause that's where I derived my worth was from these things. But now, like on the inverse is that I'm so detached from these things.

I. Like even the place I live now, I live on Vancouver Island in an absolutely beautiful place, and I love it. I do love it here, but I wouldn't say I'm attached to here. I'm happy for when like the wind blows and, and calls me to go somewhere else, to, to follow that. And, um, [00:17:00] you know, I'm happy to stay here too if that's, if I, if I'm required to be in this space for a reason.

But, um, it's just the idea of accepting and surrendering that there's a, there's a plan in motion, in my opinion, that. Is too complex for my monkey brain to understand. You know what I mean? Right. So I'm, I'm surrendering to it. And, and now I just, you know, I trust that no matter where change takes me, I'm gonna, 'cause I feel a lot more validity in myself and my own ability to create, um, like what's around me. Wherever I go or whatever happens, I know that I'm gonna be in the exact place I need to be at that moment. And that's what makes life such a fun journey is when you, um, no longer have to anchor yourself to a place, to a person, to a thing, to a title, but when you can just go with the ebbs and flows and trust that wherever you are is the place you need to be in that [00:18:00] moment.

Track 1: I am gonna ask you, I can hear listeners going, okay, yeah, but how do I develop that sort of trust within myself to listen and flow and that sort of thing? I mean, I. Me moving to Los Angeles, my ego's got, has had resistance for months. I have to check it actually because even now it's like, oh, I gotta find a place, how much, where?

Da, da, da, and I'm watching, you know, the ego kind of doing some wild thing. Even though I know full well this is precisely where I'm supposed to be, because

I would literally not have chosen it for myself, you know? And it's like all signs are pointing in this direction. All my friends, all these clients, all these people, it's like, this is, this is so correct.

But I'm curious, 'cause I've talked about surrender before on this show, but if somebody were to ask, okay, well how do I learn to surrender and live in this way that you're talking about, where it's like. [00:19:00] For me, I know that I'm an instrument for the divine. I'm, I'm allowing that to happen. So wherever I'm supposed to go on this planet, I will go and I'll enjoy it along the way.

But I literally asked, you know, use me as an instrument of peace and love and light on this planet. Um, just a few months ago, I was traveling. Uh, I went to Romania, Albania. Ireland, Scotland, Greece, twice Italy, Mexico, and half of those places. I wasn't even planning on going and then I got back to Maui and was like, oh yeah, I'm done here and now I'm here.

And it's like, how did that even happen? I, me, I've learned to just. For me now, it's a way of being. When I'm feeling called or guided, I just listen. But, um, I'm curious what your perspective or what you would share to someone who's asking, okay, that's cool, but like, how do I develop that trust, that skill, that listening within [00:20:00] myself to be willing to do that?

And certainly, I think you've already expressed a few things. Um. Attachment. Right? I mean, I just literally sold most of my material possessions last week and it's like, cool, whatever. I'm not attached to it, it makes it easier for me to do what I do. Um, but I'm curious what you would recommend or guide someone that says, yeah, I wanna live more like that, but I don't know

how.

Matt: So my, my answer for you here would be. It might not be the answer might not be the answer that the listener would like to hear, but it's something like sometimes you have to, uh, experience the thing, experience your life without the things to realize you don't need them. Right. And. For me, I, I'm, I'm not gonna claim that I willingly gave up everything. Like, like as I mentioned, I think that's where different, we have a slight difference, Cameron, in our journey is that [00:21:00] you were proactive in your awakening process. You listened to the signs, I ignored them, my stubborn. Ego said, no, like I'm holding on. Like I've got all these things. You can't take these trophies from me. I dare you to take them from Me

Like, I've worked hard for this. I've earned this. This is my Right, right. And the universe was like

all right, bet. We'll take this. You know? And so when I say like, surrender, that wasn't something I chosen to first, that's something I learned how to adapt to, and now I've realized that it's like, it's the way.

Track 1: and now

I,

Matt: Um, because I've had it,

I've had the possessions.

um, stacking them up and I've had all the titles and the things, and I was very fortunate to learn that from like a younger, like, to get exposed to all that in my early twenties to like have all this stuff that I told I would, I would want. Um, so once I had it stripped away and I learned how to live life and was kind of forced to get [00:22:00] more, um. Comfortable with myself, let's say, and find the inner joy within as opposed to within the things I started to realize that the outside things could no longer have power over me. So it's my detachment, my my way of life now, which is about surrender and detachment comes from the principle that, um, outward things have no control over me in that way. Well, they have no control over, I would say the higher self. They have control from time to time over

the ego. 'cause the ego likes to do what it does, right? It likes to put the, the body's, um, compulsions for, for, you know, pleasure and power and whatever we desire first. But when you really like, reflect on like what's really meaningful for yourself, you realize, oh, those things actually don't need to have power over me. So,

yeah. Yeah.

Track 1: For those of you who are listening to this episode and not watching it, um, behind Matt is a beautifully organized, [00:23:00] uh, bookshelf by color. So, you know, the ego may get a little bit of pleasure out of it. It does look really good, but as you're saying, yeah, for the higher self, but that doesn't really quite matter, I think for.

There are many experiences that can help. Sometimes we gotta get stripped of it, like you were saying. For me, the most recent

one was my travel. I was literally living out of a suitcase for three months in like four different climates, and I realized that I hadn't worn most of the stuff that was in there.

It was like, or I hadn't worn everything yet and I hadn't used, I hadn't read some of the books I took and these things, and it was like, so when this move came, I was like, well.

Dude, you don't need any of this. Really. Like take the things that you want, obviously and that kind of matter. But even so, it was funny, a friend of mine yesterday, she's like, yeah, I received your box to my house.

And it's like all ripped and broken. I don't know if stuff fell out and I'm [00:24:00] kind of like, I don't care. Whatever's there is there, whatever isn't. Well, it's fine. Um, I do wanna circle back to. The part in your story then that became more about wellness. So what did wellness mean to you? What were the tools, the modalities, the areas of focus that you, um, were attracted to?

Because for me, in my journey, one of the big ones was astrology and yoga. These two were like incredibly important. But I'm curious for you, what did wellness look like? What were these tools? What were the things that really had you sort of exploring your own? Spirituality Spiritu, perhaps more

deeply. Yeah, excellent question.

Matt: I would say it started with physical wellbeing and mind wellbeing. So before I integrated, like let's say the spiritual or soul, you know, identifying with like a three piece structure, mind, body, spirit, like without, [00:25:00] before integrating the, the spirit part, I was definitely focused on like the body part. And, um, getting, getting in shape for the first time in life was actually a big, big part of it. And actually like having, showing I had control over my body. I, before this, I had always been a very skinny person. Um, and like. Very unconfident in my body and like, just like developing routines and discipline and, um, just in the fitness and gym and weightlifting and eating better and working on my diet was actually like a really helpful healing kind of process, even if not one that's perceived as, you know, quote unquote spiritual.

I think like, um, developing that competence in our, in our spirit's temple, so to speak, is like, is important if not necessary for you to even be able to, I. Get into the deeper layers. It's like, how can you, you can't, I would put it this way, like you can't probably get your biggest connection with the divine in the church.

And the church is a disaster, right? It's like you wanna get, make the church immaculate, or the temple or [00:26:00] the mosque or whatever, uh, space you choose to occupy. You probably want that to be like immaculate before then. You focus and you know, you, you make, um, connection to a higher consciousness. And I think that's almost true for, for our life as well.

It's like for us to truly connect spiritually. I think you're, you have to create a, a sanctuary with, with your body and with your mind to do that. So, and I did that through, uh, fitness and health in terms of physical fitness and health. And then also mind pieces, which was my meditation practice came in. So I started meditating for the first time in my life and doing it consistently and not just like a little bit like, um, you know, five minutes here and there like. Taking on challenges with myself to build meditation practice of 20 minutes a day, 30 minutes a day, 40 minutes a day, to the point where I could meditate for an hour a day. And getting consistent with that. and and what began to shift for me, Cameron, was the realization, you know, when I got into meditation, I had thought that was all about, I. Learning how to [00:27:00] cope with stress and like, you know, feeling better. And I, and, and it is, right? But I had thought that was like what it was for only,

right?

But That's but what you realize and what you're aware of is like when you start doing that, it actually starts opening up some other channels. And they're not just of the mind, but also of they're making space now for the spirit to come forward. And now meditation to me, although it is. Helpful for stress levels and, and, and nervous system regulation.

What's more prominent for is connection to deep inner self connection to source, connection to the divine, being able to listen. Specific modalities, though don't get me wrong, I love, I love, uh, doing a witchy tarot poll every time to time, and I have my collection of, of stones that, that I quite like admiring. Um, but I would say like for me, spirituality has always been that something that's really within. And, um, I. Something that I talk quite a bit about in some of my writing and on my social platforms is, is about, um, [00:28:00] non-material spiritualism. And what I mean by that is like, just because you're a spiritual person or he a person who's healing doesn't mean you need to all of a sudden start wearing linen and hemp and beads and, and stuff like you want to.

That's great and no problem. But like spirituality is something that's. That's beyond the tools. It's beyond the, the crystals and the cards and the, and the, you know, rolling the bones or the reading the tea leaves. Like, it's, it's really within everything, in my opinion, like a, a handful of sand is just a spiritual as like your most beautiful rose quartz crystal.

'cause it's all. It's all, um, of the divine. So I would say like no specific modality did I grab onto in terms of like tool system for the spiritual space, but really just, um, putting my body and mind in order so that I could have start having those conversations

Track 1: I, I think for a lot of people, I've mentioned this a couple times in different ways, but for a lot of people, particularly in the spiritual space. We talk about things like [00:29:00] enlightenment or ascension, and it's like this coming out of the body situation, or at least this idea, and yet actually to understand ourselves as spiritual beings is to know

ourselves in physical form because that's what we chose to come into and embody in this lifetime, which for me, I think is why yoga was so powerful because it was really.

I'm very spiritually inclined, but not necessarily physically inclined. And yoga was the, the connection I was like, oh, there is, there's this both. And um, I. I also really like what you were saying too about the mind and disciplining it obviously, but through meditation you will know personally your higher self.

Um, you know, I sit here obviously on this podcast and point in the direction of things for people, but you ultimately, if you wanna live your soul's purpose, you've gotta make that connection with your higher self. And I can give you the tools and help you with that, but ultimately it comes down to. Your relationship within [00:30:00] your inner being, through meditation really, and other practices, meditation, contemplation.

Right. We only know that from having a, an experience within us. Um. Yeah. But the body piece is so important for a lot of people. It is a physical issue that ends up waking them up spiritually. Um, because our bodies are actually creations of our consciousness, right? Consciousness is first, and then we create the body and all illness or issues or disease or whatever conditions we have. And so I love what you were saying about sort of, for you, the focus on the physical body actually had the impact in the spiritual, um. Obviously because you were inclined and you were seeing it that way. I was just working with one of my clients last night, actually. I, he'll, I know he would actually probably appreciate me talking about this, so I'll share it.

Um, but specifically about physical fitness and he was talking about the types of clients that he works with [00:31:00] and that they're usually have judgment issues or, you know, self-worth issues or whatever these sort of blocks and a lot of times inside the space of physical. Whatever, going to the gym or something like that, a physical practice, they maybe forget the emotional or spiritual components, and yet they're all intertwined.

Right? And so if we're understanding ourselves as souls inside physical form, this form matters, then it's really important and it can give us access to the other dimensions of ourselves if we allow it to, right? If we

see it in that

lens.

Matt: I, yeah, I think you're right on the money with that, Cameron. For sure.

Gonna sound cheesy, but those moments where I just have like extreme bliss, like I think like just a few days ago I was. Just in the kitchen, you know, cleaning up, making order of a messy [00:32:00] kitchen, H like cooking a bunch of stuff for friends and just like by myself in the room, kind of like a madman, just like laughing and just like smiling from like ear to ear because just acknowledging like how blessed I am and what's around and like how much joy I'm finding and like I think I measure right now in my life's success based on the frequency of these moments. Whether I'm like driving or I'm out surfing or I'm doing the dishes or I'm. Hanging out with a, with a good friend of mine. Just these moments of like overwhelming bliss. And that's how I know I'm like kind of in the flow is because like that's the moment I'm always like, it feels like when you're in those blissful moments, like you're really, your spirit is elevated into a higher position.

Like there's a few things in life that gets you there. And I think for me it's about like the frequency of how often we can stay in there. Um, and I would say also like when you can find those moments of bliss in the things that. Perhaps others don't see it within, um, or [00:33:00] because

it's really just, um,

it's really just you find it once again, like within yourself, like the things around you can help you reflect on it.

But if your joy and bliss is purely reliant on external things, once again, that's not like, I don't really see that as a sign of realness for the spiritual self. It's when like you can be stripped of all of those things and still be blissful. Um, which is, which just to like carry on this a little bit more. When I think back to like post, um, I. Post spiritual awakening when I had like quote unquote nothing when I had to like move back in with my folks for like a couple months and like living literally in like the basement, like just being like, like having so much not going for me at that time, like quote unquote not going for me. Like there was a lot of like really amazing blissful moments where I was like, holy crap. Like I'm noticing things that I've been missing and I'm like, [00:34:00] wow, there's been a relief off my shoulders and like. I'm actually like, although on the outside it looks like I'm not doing well, I'm actually like really happy right now. And that's because once again, my bliss and the joy is no longer dependent on the external things, but rather internal. So it just like, in a very long way to answer your question, it's like I think for me, I know I'm on the path and when things

are like in alignment, when I'm having these extremely high blissful moments that are really based on like kind of nothing.

Track 1: Being.

Matt: Just, yeah, just being exactly.

Track 1: Yeah. Yeah. I love what you're describing too in terms of, you were just saying like experiencing the joy or the bliss in the things that other people can't see. Even though it's the same thing, right? You are enjoying whatever, washing a dish or. Whatever. Laughing at a bird in the sky. This is like

me.

I don't really enjoy doing dishes though.

But anyway, the

point,

Matt: I thought maybe it's my book, sorting

[00:35:00] OCD, But I really love making

like,

you know, disorganized things into

Track 1: but I think what you're saying there and is what really

the sages for so long have said, it's really just about your presence so you can find joy in that moment. It, and it's. What you were talking about in the very beginning, not the external, not seeking that, oh, it wasn't the movie that made you really happy, or the ice cream cone that made you really happy.

But you know,

being able to feel grass on your feet perhaps, or finding humor in the bird song or whatever. And it was interesting you were talking about even on the spiritual path, you don't need to be dressed in linen

and wearing beads, although.

I'm doing that.

Matt: Sorry that.

Track 1: I know.

Um, however, I really

like linen and I got this from

Greece.

It's one of my favorite. I if I could

Matt: Oh, yeah's great.

Track 1: like straight up tunics and robes from ancient Greece like all the time, that would basically be [00:36:00] my wardrobe because I just like to feel more comfortable that way. But I love the point you were making anyway, which is that. A spiritual person doesn't have to look any particular way.

In fact, doesn't look a particular way because if you're connecting with yourself, your higher self or as somebody else has described it, your deeper self, your inner self, whatever feels best, um, then the external doesn't matter. You know, I can be on the street. Actually, this has happened recently. I can be on the street and see a homeless person and someone sees same exact external thing, right?

Somebody else sees whatever, fear, addiction, whatever it might be. And I see compassion actually, and it's the exact same thing externally, but the experience of it is different because of whatever you cultivate within yourself. Um. And I mean, you said that really [00:37:00] beautifully, I think in your own description of that, but that's what it means, I think to live your spiritual path as well, which is, um, to cultivate such a state of being within yourself that is your natural state of being.

I remember when I had my awakening, my first, oh my God, and actually the year subsequently after my parents and my family thought I was. Nuts and many people in my life who are probably not listening to this episode anyway, so it doesn't matter, but many people who were in my life at that time are probably aren't now, and I. Fundamentally, it would come back to this thing you're talking about again, which is perception, the inner world versus the outer. You know, people may have, uh, I don't know, something that might have triggered me in the past or something that might have derived pleasure from in the past. Now it's not. And for some reason Cam's thinking differently and, and now [00:38:00] he's blist out or peaceful and I don't really know why, because usually he'd be complaining about this, but now he isn't.

And um, I. I actually think that's some, some of the most powerful ways to help other people wake up is to show them that, look, this is within you. You want peace or joy or bliss or ease in your life.

You

can do it too.

Yeah, I,

Matt: Yeah, I agree with that a hundred percent. What it gets,

I, I,

have two things I wanna touch on here. One is like what you were just

speaking about.

For me, I think the integrated spiritual person is the person who can be at peace with the others who maybe see them as like that blist out weirdo.

And I think there's

such a trend right now in the

spiritual communities and the spiritual

dialogue that's like you to be the spiritual, person.

You have to like escape society and like find your people your tribe, right. It's

always like your soul tribe and find them and then just go live in the forest and dance and you know, ecstatic

[00:39:00] dance and eat magic mushrooms and, and do all that, which is like all in good fun. And like,

yeah, I get, I get the process of that, but I don't view it like that at all.

To me it's like the spiritual person has a responsibility to help. The rest of the world. See that bliss too, because if you're just going into the woods with your small select crew and just sharing your splendors of this higher, let's say, dimension that you're living in on earth, um, isn't that kind of like holding on and withholding from others as opposed to like sharing that and sharing this, the wealth of knowledge and the abundance that's within. Um, I think we have a responsibility as, as, let's say more conscious or awake people, if we so describe ourself like that to the collective. To help raise them. To expose them. And part of that responsibility is like getting rid of your ego's desire to be liked, right. And not be accused of being weird.

Like I have lots of friends that who are, who think I'm an absolute weirdo, but I'm okay with it. I like it because like it starts, makes really interesting conversations. [00:40:00] And um, yeah, I'd share with that. And also, I wanted to go back to the point too about like finding bliss in moments. And you mentioned about. Like compassion and even like opportunities people might see as more darker moments. And I, I also feel like part of the indication of like alignment for me is finding bliss in those Challenges.

And I've seen that

before too, where I'll see a pattern repeat that. I'm like, oh, Matt, Matt's ego likes to do this.

And look at that. We're getting this lesson presented over and over again. And it just gets to the point where I laugh. I'm like, Matt, you man, you haven't figured this out yet. Like I'm just saying that to myself and just finding like humor and like joy in the lesson itself, right? Because it like life is lessons.

And I also kind of believe, this is my take on it, that we're never presented with a lesson we can't handle. It's always within our capacity. And when we're struggling with it, it's because we're just, that's the learning process. You're not gonna start your math quiz and get a hundred percent the first time.

It usually takes you messing up a whole bunch and the teacher [00:41:00] helping you and assisting you. So like, why beat yourself up when you make, when you forget to carry the one somewhere and you make the wrong number, why not just be like, laugh and be like, oh my gosh, I always forget to carry the one. And I think that's the same with with life's lessons.

It's like, wow. Matt always forgets to like do X, Y, Z. Like find it funny so that you can

learn from that. Um, I felt compelled to just to, to attach that to that as well, because I think that's also like a helpful reframe

for me too,

is finding joy in those challenges.

Track 1: Yeah. So what do you think it means to live

with purpose?

Matt: Yeah. Like purpose?

meaning life, right. These concepts, um, for me, like right now, it's. Like, yeah, I think it's kind of like what you mentioned before about like being a, a conduit for the divine in some way, or at least the divine within ourself. Like honoring, I think living with purpose for me is honoring why I've been put, why I chose to incarnate on this [00:42:00] planet, right? It's like, that's what I came here for. I didn't come for the, the pleasures and the splendors and the material like that all stays, the, the higher self knows that. So what did I come for? And like part of that process is discovering that. And for me, when people are like, I don't know what my purpose is, I'm like, great, you do, your purpose is to discover your purpose is to make like all of your efforts on finding that thing.

And how do you do that? You go inwards, right? You start stripping all to find the thing that you are, I found it helpful to first remove the things that you aren't,

right. Examining the self and be like, oh, I'm not

this, I'm not this, I'm not this. These are just fake identities. And as you start stripping them, that's how you find who you are. So, yeah, I think purpose for me is, uh, is living out, um, that, that sacred duty

to, uh,

whatever higher consciousness put us here.

Track 1: Hmm. Yeah. I love the idea

of getting clear and stripping away that which you are not. I mean, when I coach my clients, [00:43:00] this is exactly what's happening. But for listeners, I don't think I've really spoken about this as explicitly in other episodes and. Whatever this looks like for you in terms of fostering your own self-inquiry.

But I've learned over times, many, many things that I am not, and fundamentally I know that I am love a being of love. I do know that I am teacher. I don't mean a teacher. That's a label. That's a role. I am teacher. Or another way of saying it is the universe or divine intelligence is teaching through me. I would that probably be a more accurate way of how I understand it.

Um, yeah, and there's really not a whole bunch else. Everything else is just a label. Just a label and just an identity. Um, but I am so many things, but none of the. [00:44:00] Impermanent passing identities or trophies. Right? Because Cameron, this identity will cease to exist at some point. But my true

essence as a being of infinite intelligence in

the universe

will remain

Matt: Yeah. It'll cease to be on

like the human plane. Right. Until they say, I think the last

time your name is spoken, it's like that's how long you exist. Right. But as you mentioned, there's like a

higher dimension. Some people they last a lot longer 'cause they cast legacies that last thousands of years.

Right. The names we think from 2000 years

ago that still persists. right?

Track 1: that

Matt: But,

um, I, I agree with you

on that as well. I think, um.

I just, I, I agree

Track 1: Well, what a lovely conversation. Thank you so much, Matt, for spending some time with me and connecting with me. And for those of you who would like to connect with Matt and his work,

you're welcome to find his information

in the show notes. Thank

you. Amazing.

[00:45:00] Along my own spiritual journey and from my experience supporting people in living their soul's purpose, I've discovered that living in alignment with our purpose comes down to three things. And unfortunately, most people unknowingly ignore these three things that will actually help them live in alignment. These three things form my Soul's Purpose Framework.

If you're ready to learn how these things can support you in your spiritual journey. Check out my video resource, "The 3 Keys to Your Soul's Purpose".

In it, I share my framework for helping you identify what's the next best step. On your journey to living your purpose.
