Reflections for 2019 (#5): The People in Your Life Are Your Life

I want to acknowledge that I have missed writing for the last week. I realize that I made a commitment to writing every day for the remainder of 2019. However, I made a conscious decision to be present with the people in my life around the holidays and I am happy for making that choice. Not to worry, I will still share my story of 2019 with you.

The longer I live in California, the more I realize just how precious my time is when I spend it with family and friends in Massachusetts. I am fortunate that I am able to travel back home for the holidays and I consider myself even more fortunate that I have been able to travel as much as I have the past two months.

About a week ago, I was in Hawaii. The week before that, I was in Jamaica. I am currently in Massachusetts via California and had a whirlwind of a trip to get here. The best part of this trip (and all the travels I have been on recently) has been the people that I’ve met. The thing that is on my mind tonight is appreciation for the time I have spent present with the people in my life over the past few weeks. The opportunity to foster both existing and new relationships is something that I am grateful for.

I had a great week at the beginning of December vacationing with my sister, brother-in-law and his sister on a siblings trip in Jamaica. We definitely had our fun in the sun, enjoyed each others’ company, and met great people along the way. Then, I was off to Hawaii!

I initially felt called to Hawaii because I was invited by my friend Michelle. I was also encouraged by the work of two people, Mackenzie and Michael, when I came across them online through a podcast and a Google search of their website. They have created a community online−a soul tribe− that they call Kapu. Inspired by their work, I reached out to them directly. When I planned my trip, they graciously invited me to spend time with them while in Maui. We shared deep conversation at the beach and at their house over a Kakao ceremony, giving thanks for the gifts in our lives and setting intentions for the new year. I am grateful for the opportunity to connect with members of my soul family and it all happened because I said “yes” to the signs that the Universe sent me.

During my trip home, I experienced a major delay and missed my connection in LAX. If it had not been for my friend Kelly, I would not have made it to my afternoon flight on JetBlue and would not have warm clothes for Massachusetts. I am very grateful for her act of generosity and helping me out that day.

The time I have spent with family and friends since my journey to Massachusetts has been invaluable. This trip home for the holidays has been a really special one for me. Hopefully, this holiday season has been equally special for you.

Wherever you are this holiday season, recognize the people around you. Take the time to acknowledge them. Be with them. And honor their presence. As 2019 comes to a close, take a few moments to recognize the gift of others and the gift of your own life. And remember, the people in your life are your life.
